The Link Between Animal Abuse and Domestic Violence - Free Essay Example

Introduction In 2017, 90% of the 1,873 domestic violence programs in the United States contributed to a survey conducted by the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV). In this particular survey, NNEDV collected data over a 24-hour period from the participating organizations on September 17th of that year, compiling together the number and types of calls they received. The study found that over 72,000 victims in the United States were served in a single day (NNEDV, 2017). Coupled with this information is the fact that in a study verified by the United States Humane Society, upwards of 71% of domestic violence victims stated that their abuser lashed out at pets as well (The Humane Society, 2017). Considering that animal cruelty and domestic violence are pressing issues that are often intertwined with one another, there are a few observable links that exist between the two. Some of these links include having the low activity variant of the MAOA gene, childhood trauma, heightened levels of testosterone, and exposure to societal pressures (I.e. toxic masculinity). In this paper, these links will be analyzed, and their likelihood as being potential indicators for physical violence and cruelty will be determined. Given the fact that so many cases of domestic violence and animal cruelty go unreported every year, this paper will also establish how these links may manifest in public spaces, and how potential signs of abuse/cruelty can be reported. Link #1: MAOA-L The MAOA gene, colloquially referred to as the Warrior gene, is responsible for breaking down neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin. Dopamine is responsible for motor-function and releasing feel-good chemicals, while serotonin plays a role in regulating mood, sleep, and emotions. In individuals that have the low-activity variant of the MAOA gene (MAOA-L), heightened aggression and impulsiveness have been observed (Cohen, 2018). This is due to the fact that MAOA-L does not break down dopamine and serotonin as efficiently as it should. This inefficiency results in the neurotransmitters not being broken as quickly, resulting in irregularities in dopamine and serotonin levels that lead to the previously stated symptoms. That is not to say that everyone with the low-activity variant of the MAOA gene is prone to committing acts of violence, however. In a study published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), it is stated that approximately 40% of the worlds population has the MAOA-L variant of the gene (Hunter, 2010). Although possessing this variant of the gene does not necessarily indicate that one will commit an act of violence, the presence of MAOA-L increases ones likelihood to commit a violent act. Keeping this in mind, many have turned to using behavioral genetics in recent years to explain why a spouse may lash out against their partner, or commit an act of violence against an animal. In states such as Michigan, however, domestic violence and abuse are not recognized as a sufficient defense, so the application of this type of science in a courtroom setting is minimal at this point in time. Because MAOA-L results in irregularities in the production of serotonin and dopamine in ones body, this leads to blind aggression. If someone with MAOA-L is provoked, they will typically lash out on what provoked them in a verbal or physical manner. This implies that this particular link between domestic violence and animal abuse is not necessarily causal, as the associated gene is largely blind to particular instances due to the fact that aggression spurred by MAOA-L is mostly impulsive. Link #2: Childhood Trauma Another link between domestic violence and animal abuse can be observed through individuals that have suffered childhood trauma. Due to the fact that people often experience a tremendous amount of neurological development during their adolescence, particularly traumatic events may lead to inhibited growth of the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for executive functions that control impulsiveness, rationale, and aggression (Prefrontal Cortex, 2015). For children that have experienced childhood trauma that also codes for the low activity variant of the MAOA gene, their likelihood to commit an act of domestic violence or abuse animals raises even more. If ones amygdala and prefrontal cortex are stunted/damaged, this has been shown to interfere with ones ability to make rational decisions and reign in their emotions. With an inadequate dispersal and production of dopamine and serotonin as a result of MAOA-L, this would intensify ones emotional instability. A study published by NCBI pointed to a lack of nurture on behalf of parents may also lead to developmental disorders down the line such as Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Conduct Disorder (Petersen, 2014). Oppositional Defiant Disorder is the tendency to defy authority figures. This could include police, teachers, and parents. Conduct Disorder, on the other hand, is often categorized as a disorder wherein someone will not abide by conventional social norms, and instead express regressive behavioral patterns. What is peculiar about these two disorders is the fact that they are both diagnosed during adolescence, and presumably influenced by genetic and environmental factors. In analyzing CD and ODD, antisocial and disobedient tendencies have been observed at much higher rates in criminals that have committed physically violent acts such as murder, rape, and domestic abuse. (Febres, 2014) Perhaps the most prominent link between animal abuse and domestic violence as it pertains to childhood trauma has been through the act of committing animal abuse during ones adolescence. In studies with criminals that have been found to have caused unnecessary pain and/or death to animals while they were children, it was found that they were more likely to carry those acts of violence into adulthood. It was also found that many offenders would commit acts against people that were similar to acts they committed against animals. This points to the fact that animal abuse may in some ways condition offenders to commit violence against their spouse, or other individuals that may set them off (Febres, 2014). Link #3: Hormonal Aspects of Violence Testosterone is the sex hormone found in males that is responsible for developing secondary sex characteristics (body hair, muscle growth) and the male reproductive system (scrotum, prostate, testes, etc.). While development is testosterones primary function, there are some additional effects, particularly as it pertains to mood. Testosterone is an anabolic steroid. Like other identified anabolic steroids, testosterone leads to increased activity in the amygdala, which is responsible for emotionally driven responses and actions. Because there is increased activity in the amygdala, this redirects most neural communication away from the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for rational decision making, leading to heightened levels of aggression and a shorter temper (Pinto, 2010). In a study researching the biological correlates of intimate partner violence perpetration, it was corroborated that testosterone does, in fact, lead to heightened levels of marital aggression, as well as an increased risk in committing intimate partner violence. While it has been found that testosterone does indeed result in heightened levels of aggression, it has also been found that it may be mediating as it pertains to the quality of ones marriage. Despite this conflicting finding, it has also been found that people are more likely to file for divorce as well (Pinto, 2010). Much like the previously established links, the correlation between animal abuse and domestic violence is aggregated through aggression and rage. In a study published by American Humane, it was stated that 71% of women seeking shelter from an abusive partner stated that their partner threatened to kill, harm, or maim their pets. As this study looking into domestic partnerships between men and women, a likely inference can be drawn that these abusive partners in fact had heightened levels of testosterone, given their overtly aggressive tendencies (Understanding the Link Between Animal Abuse and Family Violence, 2016) Link #4: Societal Aspects of Violence, and Toxic Masculinity So far, three links have been established between animal abuse and domestic violence that have largely been based on behavioral genetics. One additional link between these two acts can be drawn not through genetics, but environmental factors. The most prominent among these is the idea of toxic masculinity, and the cycle of socialization. The principal idea of the cycle of socialization is that from birth, one is socialized by their environment, and bombarded with messages that reinforce particular ideologies. This includes gender norms, religious beliefs, and specific behavioral patterns. This pattern of socialization in the most extreme of circumstances may lead to someones upbringing having a negative effect on their temperament and reactions to certain individuals. Toxic masculinity, referred to as hegemonic masculinity in the field of gender studies, is one trait that may be acquired through socialization. The core tenet of hegemonic masculinity is Manifestation of Links in Public Spaces. Conclusion At the root of all of the links between animal abuse and domestic violence that have been observed in this paper lies aggression, neurological anomalies, and errors associated with cell communication and/or signaling. All of these signs and symptoms, while not 100% indicative of the likelihood of one to commit an act of violence or animal cruelty, do in fact point to an increased likelihood of doing so. From the data compiled above, the most likely offenders are going to be males with high levels of testosterone that have the low activity variant of MAOA, who have also experienced stunted growth of their prefrontal cortex as a result of childhood trauma. At the end of the day, however, anyone is capable of committing acts of violence. It is for this reason why the behavioral genetics that points to the increased likelihood of committing acts of violence should be noted, but not used as definitive evidence to apprehend or besmirch someone. Since behavioral genetics is a relatively new field that is constantly experiencing brand new developments, the science behind why people commit acts of domestic violence and animal abuse is not entirely clear. While researchers have published papers on apparent links between the two, as well as reasons why people may commit overt acts of aggression during their adolescence and adulthood, all of the factors associated with it have not been properly identified. This can be observed through the fact that not all perpetrators of domestic violence and animal abuse are men with MAOA-L, heightened levels of testosterone, and victims of childhood trauma. This indicates one of two things: There is a common factor that has not yet been identified or each of the identified factors that boost the likelihood of committing a violent act are not necessarily intertwined. Because of the current ambiguity surrounding the topics of domestic violence and animal abuse and their linkage as it pertains to behavioral genetics and environmental factors, research of this topic is far from conclusive.

It was characterized by its high population density (which is a continuity to this day), and its early, high level of urbanization. From the 16th to 18th centuries, the Dutch rose to power comparable to even Britain and France. This was also the period of time when world trade flourished and linked continents, acquiring the name â€Å"global trade.† In fact, the Dutch republic experienced such growth and improvement that the 17th century was the â€Å"Dutch golden age.† During the golden age, trade, military, art, and science flourished. This all led to a domination in trade, production of ships, etc. Western Europe After the split of the Roman Empire, the western half fell as the east prospered. First off, Allport`s Scale was created by psychologist Gordon Allport in the year 1954. This scale is a measurement of the manifestation of prejudice in a society. It consists of five stages of prejudice, they`re ranked by the increasing harm in which they produce. The five stages are Stage 1- Antilocution, Stage 2- Avoidance, Stage 3- Discrimination Stage 3B (later added)-Subtle aggression, Stage 4- Physical attacks, and Stage 5-†¦show more content†¦Recently, I`ve read a short story named A Rose for Charlie. This brief passage contains examples of all five kinds of prejudice on Allport`s Scale. First I`ll provide a brief summary of the story; then in the paragraph following the summary, I`ll present evidence from the brief text of the phases of prejudices. A Rose for Charlie is a petite sized story about a gay young man. Growing up in the late 1970s when he had reached high school, Charlie Howard was fair-haired and small-boned; the way he presented himself set him apart from most of the other boys in Portsmouth. The small New Hampshire town seemed like a living hell he couldn`t escape quite often. Nonetheless, Charlie had a tough exterior being he didn`t cry or run away most days. He underwent torturous treatment from a seemingly countless quantity of people. Between the characteristics I listed above, him having asthma, a learning disability, and being gay, there was almost no way he could`ve prevented being constantly harassed. Charlie was trapped in his own life. He saw living at home after high school as being a disaster, he didn`t get along well with his stepfather and didn`t think he would go far beyond what he`s capable of. (Which probably was n`t much considering his low grades the tolerance of gays back then) Leaving town seemed to be his only option, he eventually moved in with other men twice. This assignment will make us understand what actions an Ebay e-commerce organization can take on the current scenario, how new opportunities can help develop the new client service delivery relationships with Information and Communication Technology retailers and products and what would be an action plan for an Ebay e-commerce to stand out in a crowd for a long term(CSO, 2016). Role of ICT Information and Communication Technology plays a vital role in the growth of Ebay E-commerce. ICT manages all the transactions and messages online(UNCTAD, 2003). This helps the Ebay E-commerce to manage their online users who buy the products by surfing the internet in their free time rather that going out to the market. This typically includes browsing products online, adding the products to the cart and checking out by paying though the online payment gateways (Credit Cart, Debit card, net-banking, third party APIs like PayPal) integrated in the Ebay E-commerce website(Gupta, 2014). The role of ICT is important in any e-commerce as it manages all orders, payment transactions, invoices, or description of products and handle all automated exchange of data between ICT and Ebay E-commerce. The ICT provides various other services like Cloud computing, ISDN, mobile internet, broadband connections, dial up access, etc. ICT is considered significantly important for Ebay E-commerce and help them understand their business and competition in the international market. The broadband service by Internet and communication technology helps most in boosting up the revenue of the Ebay E-commerce service in a wider range(Mokashi, 2012). Comparison of Ebay with its competitors This report is to study the competitors of the larger marketplace website. That is, Ebay. Ebay, has few direct and indirect competitors in the global market which work on the similar verticals like competitors providing services like auction, marketplace service, classified services, etc. (Eghoff Mabey, 2014) Few factors on which we can evaluate the competition on Ebay with its competitors includes: Brand recognition. Quality of product and security Professional management Strong economic trends Brand name in the global market Strong financial reputation Strong and trusted brand name Client engagement Rates of goods and services, etc. To describe both the e-commerce and m-commerce competition of the Ebay with other marketplace, the other factors which can be considered are: Ebays online visibility and its responsive feature on all the devices. Reliability of the system. Cost of services. Security of the payment and delivery to the customers, etc. Ebay has a believe that they have made the best use of the above said factors, but there are chances when its competitors will can make the best or most effective use of these to achieve or produce better than Ebay(Chaffey, 2013). Goals and Objectives: The goal of Ebay marketplace is to increase the revenue or turnover by using the services of Information Technology and Communication (ITC). The main objectives of the Ebay marketplace are defined using the services of the ITC factors mentioned below : Making the online customers to get registered on the Ebay marketplace using their email or social media accounts. This will help the Ebay marketplace to increase their client base. The registered users will help the Ebay marketplace in increasing the auction bids, buyers and sellers(Kent, 2008). The increase in the number of users/auctioneers/buyers/sellers will be directly proportional to the revenue in the future. Developing new opportunities using ICT services: This is to study the strength of current Ebay marketplace and using them to create chances of developing a relationship with Information Communication and Technology. ICT can help Ebay with creating a strong business alliance and helping them with: Providing the features of performing the LIVE audits and bids in the online marketplace. Providing the sellers to post jobs or opportunities online so that the users can apply for those posts as per the competitive value. Ebay has launched a new feature called Safeharbour. ICT can help eBay to perform all the security holes and validating all the customers using the online portal. Creating new business alliances with other offline future competitive market. Making Ebay communicate with business in the global market, which can help them to launch or bring traffic to their website in different countries. Providing them the softwares or technologies that can put forward their brand place at the top in the international market(Gallagar, 2009). Action plan for longer term: Few days back, Ebay has revealed their long term plan which will help the marketplace to increase their revenue by approximately 41% over the next few years. They have also stated in their revealing note that this has been analyzed and evaluated as per the current profit coming from the third party payment gateway, PayPal(Zacks Equity Research, 2013). The CEO of the company has some plans to continue their business alliance with PayPal, taking into consideration PayPals role in the overall growth of the Ebay marketplace in the global market. The primary service provided by the Ebay marketplace, that is, auction has also been considered as the vital feature in increasing the turnover, thereby providing an opportunity to bring the best opportunities in the future. Both PayPal and Auction feature of Ebay marketplace are nothing without the core service provided by the ICT, which plays a crucial role in creating the overall growth plan of Ebay e-commerce marketplace. Conclusion: In this report, we have evaluated the role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Ebay organization and have performed the SWOT Analysis based on the current issues, goals, objectives and action plans of the current situation of the Ebay marketplace. Writing Research Papers on the Present Day

Writing Research Papers on the Present DayIn researching our 2020 survey on research paper topics for undergraduate students, the winner was the 1980s war and its apparent progress, thirty years after the conclusion of the conflict. We were surprised to see that some people didn't even realize that a major part of the conflict was in fact still going on.Articles about the war are not surprising. War articles are all over the newspaper. It's only when the topic is a major international issue that people look at articles in scholarly journals to see what research papers are actually written. Now, there are several reasons why they may do this. For one thing, many Americans had very little idea of what the history of the US involvement in the war was. The one war that seems to get regular coverage is WWII, but we didn't enter WWII until just before World War II ended. Even that event was a major event - the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Few people had any idea of the period from Roose velt's New Deal to the end of the war, but if they did, they were almost certainly unaware of the main focus of the New Deal. Then there is the fact that we Americans were not fond of the word 'War' in the first place. Americans were actually quite traumatized by the early twentieth century experience of war. Things like the lynching of black people or the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor generated extreme feelings in the American public. Those who experienced the war first hand were apt to form a different point of view any mention of it in an entirely different light.Because we were traumatized by war, we tend to think of it as something that happened 'a long time ago'. Obviously, that's not true, but to people who were young and still had the first of their memories formed in the early nineteen seventies, what happened a long time ago could seem just that. They were more likely to see reference to the war in an article than in a scholarly journal article. We also have a different u nderstanding of how we should treat war than we had thirty years ago. For starters, there are now two opposing political parties in the United States, and one of them is in favor of bringing peace to the Middle East through some form of nation building. We have also become much more knowledgeable about the world as a whole and the global economy and trade that are happening in those regions. Therefore, it's not surprising that a few war related articles would still be published. But in spite of all this knowledge and understanding, the United States is still divided over national security, international relations, military force, and the like. Those in the executive branch of the US government are clearly in favor of national security, while those in the legislative branch want to bring the country back to the status quo ante. So, yes, a lot of the articles that we saw in scholarly journals this year about US involvement in the war in the late 1970s and 1980s are about the debate abo ut the future of the US in the world and its future role in the world. That's because there's plenty of room for a story like that.At the same time, writers like myself will be looking for a story that will provoke debate, not just because it's fun, but because it's good for the brain, and will help writers understand the various types of stories they need to be writing research papers on. I hope you'll consider all this in 2020. See you next time.

Argumentative Research Paper Topics - WordPress

Argumentative Research Paper Topics - WordPressThe Wordpress news is currently full of news that relates to people who use WordPress, and what is happening with Wordpress research paper topics. You may have noticed the theme developed by Google about using Wordpress as a place to publish articles, or maybe you know that Wordpress has become the number one place for WordPress blogs to be published. If you are a writer then this is great news, but if you are interested in argumentative research paper topics this is not so good news for you. This is because Google is now telling search engines that they should only index keyword phrases that use either the articles or the WordPress blog. And they do not agree with this, and they have banned the use of these phrases as article titles. Now I have to admit that the Google algorithm is a bit different to other algorithms. However, the thing is that Google is telling the search engines that they are willing to ban certain key phrases because t hey think they are spam, when the Google algorithm is actually here to keep the search engines on the right track. They are not here to ban, they are here to help. What is so sad about this is that they will not allow the use of certain phrases that they have never heard of, nor have they ever used. When they say that Google is banning some 'keywords' they are telling the search engines to not list certain phrases when people submit an article. For example, lets take the phrase article title. Google has always allowed the use of article titles, as long as the article title is not the last words. However, now WordPress is being banned as an article title. The reason that Wordpress is being banned as an article title is because Google is saying that the use of Wordpress as an article title is spam. This is because WordPress is a blog that is not related to an article and therefore it is not relevant to an article. When the search engines hear the term 'article', it automatically means so mething that is related to the term, whether it means that the article is a journal article, a book, a documentary, or even a term used in medical terms. Now Google will not allow people to use these phrases as articles. It will not allow them to use the term in the titles of the articles either. So that is where WordPress fits in. As a blog, WordPress is very similar to a blog, it is not related to any articles. But Wordpress is a way of publishing WordPress blogs, so to them, Wordpress is an article. So what you need to do is create an article on Wordpress, or publish it on your Wordpress blog, and then use the title as the article title. Then when you write the article, instead of saying 'The Use of Wordpress', you can say 'The use of Wordpress as an article title'.

Should the U.S. be on Daylight Saving Year-Round_ Essays - Time

Amatullah Manir Dejesus Mr. D'Ambrosio CP ELA 12, Period 3 May 12, 2019 Should the U.S. be on Daylight Saving Year-Round? Daylight saving time is a concept in which clocks are changed by an hour twice a year, around March and November, that was developed by George Hudson in 1895. ( WedExhibits.) The idea behind this concept was to increase the amount of daylight in the warmer months to allow for more work to be done on farms, in industrial industries, and for more time for recreation. Another purpose of this concept is to save energy, as lights, or candles in 1895, would not need to be used as the sun is still up. However, daylight saving has become more of a social concept, as a poll concluded in 1976 found that about sixty seven percent of the population in New South Wales, Australia, prefer the use of daylight saving, as it gives time for longer summer nights. ( WedExhibits.) The idea of no longer using daylight saving time came from President Trump around March, when clocks "spring forward," and clocks are set an hour ahead, losing that hour of sleep. (Nace.) This essay will explain those small details, and the larger ones, and why the United States should not change the time system that has been used for nearly a century. Daylight saving time was first used by an entire country in 1916. (WebExhibits.) The Germans used the concept during World War I to increase efficiency in the country for the war efforts and to boost the economy. (Handwerk.) In the United States, two years after Germany began using daylight saving time, the concept was implemented and was meant to be used only during wartime to extend the work day and boost efficiency in the nation for the war efforts, giving daylight saving time the nam "War Time". (i.e) Daylight saving time was repealed after the war, only to be implemented again during World War for the same reasons as the previous World War. The concept was not repealed after second World War and stayed in use, however not every state continued to use daylight saving time, and those that did were not on the same track of time. In 1966, daylight saving time was signed into law in by President Lyndon B. Johnson in what is known as the Uniform Time Act. This act is a po licy to "promote the adoption and observance of uniform time" ( Public Law 87-378: Uniform Time Act of 1966.) This policy states when clocks are changed, however it does not state that every state has to observe daylight saving time. This idea of uniform time was necessary as some states did observe the change, some did not, and those who did observe the time change did not set their clocks back at the same time. These variations in times across the country threw radio and television stations, transportation agencies and other national services through a loop to try and keep up with the ever changing daylight saving time and the variations of. Due to this act being a policy rather than a law, it would not take much to change the use daylight saving time. There are already states that do not observe daylight saving time, such as Arizona and Hawaii, along with several United States territories. These areas do not observe daylight saving as it does not benefit the area. The closer to the equator an area is, the less beneficial daylight saving time is, as the area already gets an abundance of "daytime" and adding to the amount of daylight each day would be counterproductive. However these are the only areas that do not benefit from daylight saving time. There is also many who argue that daylight saving has negative health effects, such as sleep deprivation that can and has lead to fatal car accidents, heart attack and stroke risk and other health problems. Daylight saving time is best used for promoting productivity, even though the day after clocks are changed ahead an hour is referred to as "Sleepy Monday." While it is true that the day after daylight saving is a rough day for everyone, the rest of the eight

Ethical Terms Paper - The Ethics of Writing Term Papers

Ethical Terms Paper - The Ethics of Writing Term PapersEthics of writing papers has many ethical implications. The ethical implications are actually interrelated and one involves another. With ethics, there is no room for other people's things, pictures, or belongings. That means that the ethics of writing papers involve rules that govern personal items that can be taken away by your professor and, of course, other people's work. There are several ethics of writing term papers that you should keep in mind. The first rule of ethics is that of not infringing on the copyright of others. For instance, if you are assigned to write an essay on a topic that was published in a book or article that was written by someone else, you can't plagiarize the content. You also can't plagiarize from some sort of research that the author of the book or article did.You are allowed to steal content only from your thesis statement, the preamble, and the closing statements, but you can't steal the content o f any other text. That means that if you are copying and pasting content from the book and then pasting it on your paper, you are violating the ethical rules of writing term papers. You have to make sure that you have permission to use the book or other source material. However, you don't have to copy and paste every part of the book or source material into your paper, because you can borrow the original word or phrases and put it into your own words. You can even play with the structure of the paper as long as you can't steal the words and syntax. You can use them in an informal and conversational way.The second rule of ethics of writing ethical paper is to be prompt in doing the writing assignment. It's better to be timely than to be fast. You can't do both in your paper, because it is not worth it. You have to choose between being timely and being fast.Your instructor or other students are the ones who will judge you on whether or not you are timely on a specific ethical term pape r. They can judge whether you were timely by looking at your paper as a whole. If you found things that were missing, you have to go back and fill these gaps in your paper. But when you start writing a paper, it is OK to take time to figure out what needs to be changed. One other way to be timely is to do things in groups or classes in which they could help you to understand things and make you more educated. These are good examples of what should be done in groups. After all, ethics of writing depends on how others treat you.The ethics of writing a term paper should take into account the needs of the person who is being evaluated. By using the guidance given here, you can be timely and ethical on the next ethics of writing term paper.
